SCREENING RECYCLED GOODS

BROOKLYN, NY

Industry city is a 6 million-square-foot mixed-use complex comprised of 16 buildings spanning 35 acres on the waterfront in sunset park, Brooklyn. The transformation has included over $250 million of infrastructure improvements, the addition of destination courtyards, experience-driven dining, retail and other amenities and event programming. Right across from Industry city sits a 64.5-acre block at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal is being reactivated, as the first step in what New York City officials say will be a new cluster of maritime activity and waterfront industry.

This commissioned study was to identify design solutions to visually and physically screen use on the SBMT side of the site from the Industry city site. What we proposed was a modular solution using existing containers on the site, arranging them and reverse engineering the container. Combining wind screening material that wraps around the container, the screen also acts as a wind screen protecting users of the courtyard from the harsh winds coming from the waterfront.
