CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

CLEVELAND, OH

Education and Landscapes: The expansion of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History is creating a larger interior courtyard and a formal museum entrance to enhance an overall cultural experience. The design of the courtyard draws inspiration from the notion of habitat and most closely interprets a nest. The concentric rings set up a hierarchy of pathways which can be explored and enjoyed by all museum users. The plantings and courtyard materials will use native and local sources that will provide kinetic learning opportunities for museum goers. The entrance plaza utilizes tilted planters that spill on to the paving field and make a bold statement to present the landscape to the passerby. The raised side of the planter can accept seating platforms for users who bring picnic lunches or just want to hang out with ‘Steggie’, the museum mascot.
