The goal of the Cool Corridors study by the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) is to assess the potential effectiveness of measures that address the health threats posed by extreme heat on the streets of New York. The focus is on the identification of different types of roadway corridors across the city, showing how interventions that mitigate extreme heat can be woven into the already-bustling fabric of these corridors as a case study for how these measures can be implemented city-wide.

East Harlem's study area contains densely packed mixed-use buildings, new construction, public schools, and housing.​ Proposed improvements include cooling features near subway entrances: green roofs, fans at bus stops, shaded benches, and tree/structure shade

Jerome Avenue in the Bronx has an elevated 4 Train above a busy street with heavy foot traffic near Fordham Road and Burnside Avenue stations. The area features mixed commercial-residential uses, dense population, limited sidewalk space, and minimal greenery. Proposed improvements include benches, misting fans, umbrellas, and planted containers in curb extensions near subway entrances to provide shade and cooling.
